Through this theme, NCMHC seeks papers related to the ever-changing landscape associated with the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Potential topics might include historic shorelines and inlets; coastal policy and management; natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, floods); climate change; or human responses to a changing coastline. This theme also draws upon the concept of change to incorporate evolving maritime practices or technology; development and expansion of ports and harbors; maritime communities; maritime conflicts; trades and industries; as well as shifts in coastal tourism. While the conference committee accepts papers on all aspects of maritime history and archaeology related to North or South Carolina, we especially encourage papers that speak to the conference theme. Presentations by students, both undergraduate and graduate, and independent researchers, or members of the community are encouraged.

To submit a paper proposal, each individual or group should email the title and a 150-200 word abstract in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format to the Conference Committee of the NC Maritime History Council, ncmhcboard@gmail.com. The deadline to submit a paper proposal for consideration is OCTOBER 07,2024.

Abstracts should be a concise summary of your research and include a statement of the main purpose of your research, methods used, along with the implications of your findings. Accommodations for PowerPoint presentations will be provided; any other requirements, including audio-visual equipment, special outlets, or accommodation for disabilities should be included in the proposal.
