Tributaries is a publication by the NC Maritime History Council that supports continuing historical, archaeological, and cultural research related to the maritime history, heritage, and culture of North Carolina. Maritime history scholars are encouraged to submit research articles, interpretive essays, edited primary documents, or research notes to the journal for publication. Manuscripts addressing North Carolina's historical relationship with other states (e.g. South Carolina, Virginia) and placement within the Atlantic World are also encouraged. Tributaries also accepts a range of articles in the field of maritime studies, and interdisciplinary historical research is welcome. All members of the maritime history community, including students and independent researchers, are invited to submit articles for consideration. Contributors need not be members of the NCMHC or live in the state of North Carolina. Manuscripts submitted must be based on original research and analysis, and all manuscripts are subject to a blinded peer review process and editorial review.

See the Call for Submissions section below for details regarding manuscript preparation, submission, and review.

Photographs, tables, charts, and maps are welcome and encouraged. Images used within the text should have an associated caption in the Word document marking the position of the image in the text. Please also provide separate digital files for all imagery along with the Word document to maintain image resolution and quality. It is the author's responsibility to ensure copyright permissions are obtained for any images used.

Tributaries will not reprint or republish articles submitted to and accepted by other publications. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, it becomes the property of the NCMHC and may not be reproduced elsewhere without NCMHC’s permission. Requests for reproduction rights should be addressed to the managing editor.

If you have any additional questions about the submission process, please contact the managing editor:
